Finding The Right Ring Size

Our rings mean so much to us – love, fortune, and memories. An improperly sized ring is not only uncomfortable, but also kills the vibe. Sometimes, depending on the design, your ring may also be difficult to resize. However, with these tips from AUWL Assembly, you can know your ring size easily.

Measuring your ring size at home

There are several easy ways to figure your ring size at home:

  1. The simplest is to take an existing ring you’re comfortable with, and measure its inner diameter with a scale or measuring tape. You can measure the width in millimetres (mm) by checking the distance across the inside of the band from one side to the other. When in doubt, measure the internal diameter of a ring that fits you well.

  2. You can print out our sizing chart, and match the inner side to the circle of the right size. Each circle will tell you the right diameter.

  3. You can loop a string round your finger and measure the length of string required.

    1. Just make sure that the string is not looped too tightly or too loosely around your finger.

    2. You can also use a zip tie and cut it off at the right length. A zip tie will stay firm and locked, unlike a string.

    3. You can try it with a thin paper strip too. Mark the spot where it meets with a pencil, and then measure the distance. That’s the circumference of your finger!

  4. Just for your knowledge! Jewelry professionals use a tool called a mandrel, which takes exact measurements of rings.

Things to remember

  • Different Zodiac stones are usually worn on different fingers. Remember to measure the correct finger.

  • Your ring should fit comfortably and be snug enough to stay on but loose enough to take off.

  • Some rings go on the left hand, and some on the right. As fingers of both hands are not of the same thickness, measure the correct finger on which you'll be wearing the ring.

  • Your finger’s thickness changes through the day as blood flow changes. In the warm parts of the day, there is more blood flow to the fingers to help them lose heat, making them swell a bit.

  • Similarly, your finger’s thickness will also change by season, becoming thinner in winter and thicker in summer upto a half size.

  • Measure when your finger is thickest (such as the end of the day), so that even if the ring is a bit loose, you are not uncomfortable.

  • Do remember to measure a few times through the day, so you’ll know how tight or loose the ring will get. Even a couple of millimetres can make a big impact as to how cosy the ring is, even when the difference is not clear to the eye.

  • If the measurement falls between two sizes, we recommend you choose the larger size.

  • Additional Tip – If you’ve got a larger knuckle, measure both the base of your finger and the knuckle, then choose a size that’s a happy medium. It should glide over the knuckle comfortably but stay snug without wobbling.

Switching between Ring Size Scales

The jewelers of the world haven’t settled on one universal ring size scale yet!

Because of this, different countries have different scales. Some countries, like India, France and Germany use a scale based on millimetres; the US and Canada have numbers; while in the UK, sizes are mentioned with letters and halves. Luckily, men’s and women’s sizes are measured on the same chart.

Our pieces are tailor-made, so we will try make your ring perfect for the size you tell us. However, we recommend that if your finger’s diameter falls between ring sizes, it’ll be more comfortable to go with the larger size.

Gifting a Ring

When it’s an engagement ring, you clearly don’t want them to know till you pop the question! The same goes for a ring you’re gifting someone as a surprise.

But if you don’t want to mess up the moment with a mis-sized ring, here are a few ways to know your partner’s ring size without them knowing:

  1. If you have access to a ring they already wear, you can measure that.

  2. Else, you can ask a family member (moms usually know best) for their ring size.

  3. Make a creative excuse to measure their finger!

Resizing your Ring

Despite your best efforts, your ring may not fit well, becoming too tight or too loose. At AUWL Assembly, we are happy to offer you a one-time resizing for free within India.

  1. If your ring is looser or larger than expected, our master craftsmen will tighten it for you by removing a small part of the shank.

  2. If it’s tighter or smaller, we have to add more material to loosen it at cost.

  3. Rings with a plain shank are easy to resize. However, if you opt for twisted rings, rings with diamonds or gemstones on the band, or rings with a pave setting, we will be unable to resize them (they must, essentially, be remade).

  4. The resizing also includes free inspection and cleaning.

Indian customers can get additional services or repairs from our dedicated facility. We try to keep repair costs affordable while ensuring the integrity of your piece.

Note: For international orders, we do not offer repairs or resizing due to import duties and taxes on cross-border shipments every time we ship it.
